Why you should use social media as a marketing tool for your brand

As an ICT oriented organisation backed by the mission “to promote and support innovative and strategic use of ICT’s by women and women Organisations in Uganda” in order to take advantage of the opportunities presented by ICT’s to effectively address national and local problems of Sustainable National Development, it is interesting to see that some small and large scale business owners still do not embrace use of social media to maximize the potential, efficacy and effectiveness of their institutions as part of their business marketing mix.

Some business people regard and dismiss social media as a “waste of time”. We shouldn’t blame them because they may not have taken sufficient amount of time to reflect how the changing technology landscape including use of social media can impact on their businesses.

WOUGNET carries out ICT trainings such as Web2.0 & Social Media to help boost on both personal and Institutional capacities to effectively utilize and apply social media in their daily activities and for their own economic and social benefit.

The first notable fact of the benefits of Social Media is the large market share; Social networking websites contain the largest amount of connections and command the most attention from their user base around the globe. Adding a node for your business in this sea of database entries is a fantastic way to not only meet interesting new people, but have yourself openly viewed by many others.

There is a large segment of users hooked into the mobile market, bigger numbers of young energetic and mostly passionate users of these services (accessing Facebook and Twitter from mobile phones) and we notice that numbers have risen drastically over the past years

Branding isn’t just for corporations. It can also apply to an individual item or person. It feels great to build a collection of yourself online. Using tools like Twitter, Facebook, and Google it’s easy to develop an interpretation of yourself. This will come in handy when you’re out meeting new people and showcasing your talent to the world. It is a great way to get feedback from your client base, your followers and fans will not only let you know about what they think about your business but they will let the world know.

Most social media platforms are FREE, cost friendly and effective, one is able to market his/her business at no cost. Although there are some costs associated with advertising, it’s worth paying for online marketing.

WOUGNET conducts web 2.0 and Social Media trainings monthly which take place at the Community development Training Center (CDTC) in Kampala, Kamwokya. The Learning Opportunity covers advanced online searching engines, getting information served via alerts and RSS, collaborating remotely using Google Docs, using VoIP, and social networking (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn)

Participants are introduced to selected web 2.0 applications including social media and are given opportunity to learn how to use them hands-on. They are given a chance to see what others have done, get hands-on experience on how to use innovative applications and assess how they could adopt these innovations within the context of their work and organisation.

The overall objective of the course is to empower development professionals to recognize the potential of Social Media and make innovative use of these tools to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their teams, augment the reach of their work and enhance the institutional image of their organizations.
