Taking Libraries closer to Communities

Copy & Paste or TypeOn July 7th 2017, WOUGNET participated in the March for the launch of the Mobile Library Project. The project consists of a Mobile Library, a truck with a library in the back, taking books to 10 different schools and communities around Kampala. The project is an initiative of the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE), in partnership with Eco Bank and the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA). The major objective of this project is to promote accessibility to more educational material for children and teachers, and to create a reading culture among the youth.

At around 11 o’clock, the march started at St-Andrew’s Church Bukoto and was lead by the Uganda police and the Prison-Guard Band. Right behind them followed children from different schools from around Kampala, staff from KCCA, FAWE, Eco Bank, the Ministry of Education and Sports, and many other supporting organisations. The march was very energetic and attracted a lot of attention on the streets even though rain was pouring. The final destination was Ntinda Primary School where participants arrived at around 11:45 forming enough quorum for a reception awaiting the arrival of the Mobile Library. There were performances from various primary schools present, with children who sung and danced in honor of the Mobile Library launch. There were also children who read poems and texts about the importance of reading and education, and speeches were made by some of the organizers. Following these proceedings was the official launch of the mobile library project which involved cutting a ribbon attached to the Mobile Library.

It was a well organised and attended event that promoted the importance of the quality of education that children should have, and the value of reading. One of the greatest lessons to learn from this event is that creating access to more valuable material of education is necessary for children to have a high-quality education and knowledge. Hopefully the project will be effective and the results will be noticeable with the children and the teachers who are the beneficiaries. Below are pictures of the day’s events. Here..
