The Uganda Internet Governance Forum (UIGF) has since 2006 been a platform for deliberation on Internet governance concerns in the country. As part of the Internet Governance Forum, a global multi-stakeholder platform that facilitates the discussion of public policy issues about the Internet, the Uganda Internet Governance Forum (UIGF) provides a platform for deliberation on Internet governance concerns in the country. Debates at this annual forum focus on broad areas such as the need for increased meaningful connectivity for everyone, security, digital trust, and stability of the internet. Managing these issues, mitigating cybersecurity concerns, and addressing risks requires cooperation between the public and the private sectors, the technical community, the academic and research sector, and civil society.
The Uganda Internet Governance Forum 2024 will be held under the theme “Building a MultiStakeholder Digital Future for Uganda.” The sub-themes this year are: – Harnessing Innovation and balancing risks in the digital space; Enhancing the digital contribution to peace, development and sustainability; Advancing human rights and inclusion in the digital age; Improving digital governance for the Internet we want; Harnessing the power of AI for social development.
Session title: One Step Further: Building Data Justice from the Field. Lessons Learned in Uganda and Beyond

This moderated session intends to share perspectives on the interaction of data and social justice by policymakers, developers, companies, and the impacted communities. This session will explore the emerging findings from a data justice research recently conducted; to provide a clear understanding of the meaning of data justice, the relationship between compliance matters of privacy and social justice and access to, visibility and representation of data, especially data used in the development of AI/ML systems, and the Importance of citizen participation in the Data Value Chain in Uganda.
The panel session therefore proposes a nuanced and interactive discussion on this topic with the lead discussants and participants. Participants will leave the session with greater knowledge of the topic beyond notions of data and political rights and justice to appreciating the importance of the democratisation of the Data Lifecycle and the entire Evidence-based decision-making ecosystem. Key learnings will be captured in the form of an article.
